Neurogenesis is the generation of neurons from neural progenitor cells (NPCs). This process is primarily active during the prenatal stage of development for populating the growing brain, and it was a longstanding belief that no significant neurogenesis occurred as humans moved into adulthood. This view has changed over the last two decades with mounting evidence for mammalian neurogenesis in adults, and studies have since demonstrated the presence of populations of NPCs in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle and the hippocampal dentate gyrus subgranular zone (SGZ). In humans, however, the evidence is considerably stronger for the existence of NPCs in the SGZ versus the SVZ. Nevertheless, research into the biology of adult neurogenesis could lead to major advances in our ability to understand and potentially treat neurodegenerative disease, neuroinflammation, s troke, epilepsy, and brain neoplasms.
