Post-translational modification (PTM) refers to the decoration of proteins through covalent addition of functional moieties, such as phosphate, acetyl, and methyl groups. As most PTMs are reversible, the functional flexibility of the proteome can be expanded and controlled in a temporal and cell type-specific manner to precisely contour signal transduction and gene expression in response to various stimuli. Therefore, understanding of PTM biology is crucial for the understanding of both normal and pathological physiology.
