TXA2的合成和代谢主要由花生四烯酸及其衍生物介导，花生四烯酸在磷脂酶A2（PLA2）的作用下从膜磷脂上释放，经环氧化酶作用合成脂质中间产物前列腺素 G2和 H2，然后PGH2又被血小板上的血栓素合成酶催化生成TXA2，而TXA2不稳定，半衰期极短约为30S，可迅速代谢成稳定的无活性产物TXB2。在TXA2 作用的血小板活化通路中，TXA2和七螺旋跨膜性受体TXA2R特异性结合，在止血和血栓形成发展中进行调控。血栓素是一种血管收缩剂和强有力的高血压剂，且可促进血小板凝集。
